Starting the Year with Belief: An Exercise for Educators

The new year often brings a wave of reflection and resolutions. We’re kicking off the year thinking about beliefs, inspired by a workout instructor who said “What if this year you could focus on BELIEF instead of worry?”

Beliefs are powerful, and sometimes we don’t even realize the beliefs that we hold.  Our intentional, aspirational beliefs are hampered by unintentional beliefs we’ve acquired.

Here is a video and exercise linked in the video description, about excavating unconscious beliefs that can get in the way of these aspirational beliefs.

I’ve shared this exercise with graduate school classes, schools, organizations, and it’s a foundational step in the Positive and Engaged Learning Community ODLE (On Demand Learning Experience). For you, dear readers, here is a video clip and the reflection prompt

Please feel free to use it at a staff meeting, a team huddle, or a coaching session. It always uncovers powerful, interesting conversations. One tip: This can bring up difficult history for some folks, so I always name that and give the option to pass on sharing.
